How do police officers determine if a driver is under the influence?

Observation of the signs of a drunk driver will alert police officers of possible driving under the influence and result in a traffic stop.  The officer will initially look for signs of impairment such as the smell of alcohol on your breath, slurred speech and unsteady movements.

The police officer will ask you to get out of the vehicle if he or she suspects that you are driving under the influence.  You may be asked to perform one or more field sobriety tests.  If the officer observes evidence of intoxication you may be arrested or asked to take a chemical test to determine your blood alcohol level (BAC).

If your test results are at or above your state's legal level of intoxication you are presumed to be
driving under the influence.
